Choose Your Adventure
and Get Started

Can't seem choose your adventure or dream and don’t know where to begin? Tired of thinking and not doing? If you’re like me, you have tons of ideas, but as soon as you pick one project or goal, another looks more interesting. Or you get bored, confused, lose faith in it, satisfy your curiosity – whatever. It all ends up the same… stalled, dead-in-the-water, not happening. The dream remains a wish and you don’t get to share it, learn from it, or to see it evolve. (Yes, I'm speaking from years of painful experience.)

Maybe you want to write a book, start a business, go back to school, learn to speak Italian, or lose weight. Some dreams you probably put into energy on an ongoing basis in small chunks of your day (getting more organized, eating healthier, exercising more, saving money for travel, etc.). But those bigger ideas often require more concentrated time and energy. When the goal is too involved, sometimes we need to focus on a main dream or two at a time.

After a period of soul searching about your choices, narrow it down. It’s easy to get stuck in this phase, endlessly thinking “what if” but never actually doing anything. While it’s good to think things through, to sit with them for a while, after some time staying in this phase actually becomes destructive. Your self-esteem can get worn down because you’re not actually doing something but continue to succumb to doubt, perfectionism, and feelings of failure. Confidence is earned from the doing, not the thinking about it.

Don't let "analysis paralysis" get you – there will never be a perfect choice or perfect time. Often it is not indecision but FEAR that keeps us stuck.

Action without vision is a nightmare, but vision without action is daydreaming. ~ Japanese proverb

So what do you do? Take action! You get out of your head and push through the perfectionism, cloudiness, confusion, details, and distractions. At some point you must choose your next adventure. Draw an idea out of a hat if you have to – just pick one. And start on it. Any action will do. It is one of the best ways to cut through fear.

Begin, be bold, and venture to be wise. ~ Horace

Pick the dream with the most energy. Or pick the one that is easiest to start. Or pick the one you've had the longest. Or pick the one you need the least money and time to start. Trust that no matter what happens with the project you choose your adventure to begin with that it will lead you where you need to go, getting you another step closer to achieving your dreams, even if you can't see the way clearly yet. Most of the time you won’t know until you try it.

Remember, NOT choosing is still making a choice. And it's not helping you to reach your dreams. Indecision is an insidious disease. How badly do you want it? How will you feel if you never choose your adventure and get to live your dream? Your inner voice may be silently screaming, "NO" to that idea. Good! Listen to that voice within. It knows what is best for you and can be extremely pivotal in helping you honor your path.

But how can you choose your adventure if you’re not sure about it? Isn’t one better than the rest? Possibly, but the deadly doldrums of inactivity and self-doubt is worse than any idea you have. So choose your adventure, project, dream, idea and take action on it. You can (and maybe have) spend years mulling over where to begin, years in which your life is winding on with missed opportunities whizzing by all the time. Make a choice. Pick one by eenie-meenie-miney-moe, go with your gut, pick the piece in common with all the others; whatever you have to do just choose your adventure. Right now. Yes – now. You have 5 minutes… GO.

Got one? OK. That’s the starting point. Trust me – you just liberated yourself and stopped some of your gremlins in their tracks! Now forget about the other ideas for a while – you’ll have time to regroup and revisit those later.

How can I be so comfortable with that kind of selection process? Because I believe that everything happens for a reason. It’s all a starting point.

See it through. You’ll learn something, grow, and progress. And this will get you closer and closer to your most important dreams and life vision. Plus, it's a fun ride so enjoy all of the twists and turns. As long as you keep moving forward, you are on your way!
