Make Your Own Vision Boards

Vision boards

are a fun way to help bring your future a bit more into the present. By clarifying your goals and making them seem more tangible, you bring yourself a step closer to your dreams.

How do I make a vision board?

  1. Decide if this board is for all your goals or a theme board of a specific set/type of goals or event. For example, you could make one main board and then one smaller one for just your fitness goals or one for just your cruise trip. Make as few or as many as you want.
  2. Get a board of any color that you like. Poster board works fine (as do any smaller sized boards). I prefer the plasticized poster board (foam core) as they can be reused. Regular poster paper rips when I pull the tape off but the plasticized ones do not. Painting canvases are also reusable and are sturdy and easier to prop up. I prefer a black background as it makes the color "pop." Use whatever feels right to you.
  3. Get magazines and scissors and tape out (or rubber cement, although it's messier and not easy to update your board. Avoid white glue as it makes paper wavy). Tape lets you update your vision board later as your visions are manifested and new ones come into view.
  4. Choose which goals you want to include. Examples: Exercise daily, eat more whole fresh foods, get more sleep, feel more confident and centered. Or, if you're not sure of your specific goals yet, close your eyes and take a deep breath. What do you want to feel more of in your life? Joy? Love? Inspiration? Clarity? Peacefulness? Focus your board on 2-3 of the strongest feelings you get or create a board for each feeling. Find images that resonate with that feeling. (Make sure to use color themes in your board as color evokes emotion wonderfully.)
  5. Flip through mags and cut out pics or words you like. Don't be too picky in the beginning, just grab any "maybes" and put them aside.
  6. When you're done, lay the images you like best onto the board and apply them. Any order you like is fine. Some people put things in categories (romance in one space, career stuff in another) or you can do it all mish-mash like a collage. I tend to do the later as that's how life feels to me - everything everywhere - seems more exciting that way to me.
  7. Voila! You just created a vision board. Change it anytime you want but don't worry about the details too much. The main thing is that you feel excited when you look at it. Keep working with it until you like the images on it so it feels uniquely your own vision of the future. Put it somewhere you will see it every day.

Tip: Use color to create the right feeling. If the board is white and feels too plain, add colored construction paper behind some of the graphics to frame them (creates a mat effect). Or use plainer magazine ads to ad chunks of solid colors as splashes to fill in gaps. If you are going for peaceful goals, blues, purples, and soft greens work well. If you want more excitement, reds, oranges, yellows, and bright greens might do the trick.
